>Swine Flu
The diocesan guidelines (which are given further down this page) still remain our guide to Swine Flu and any action needed. I am not aware at present of any reason to change our current practice for Holy Communion and the Sign of Peace. If this position changes I will inform you immediately. As a precaution all extra-ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are asked to wash their hands using the alcohol hand gel provided before distributing Holy Communion. Finally, as a reminder to everyone, if you feel unwell, the medical advice is that you should stay at home. Obviously, in those circumstances you do not have to observe the Sunday Mass obligation.
Diocesan Guidelines
Although the Swine Flu has been declared a 'Pandemic', the advice we have received is that at the moment there is no necessity to look at a national strategy, although if a pandemic develops further and more stringent measures are put in place, this may then become necessary. There are parts of the country where 'clusters' of Swine Flu cases exist, but we are not yet at the stage of making decisions on a diocesan basis regarding Communion on the Tongue, Communion under Both Kinds, and the Sign of Peace.
It is suggested that a two-staged approach be taken locally:
Stage 1: When there are a large number of Swine Flu cases locally, at least some schools have been closed (or have very high levels of sickness), and there are multiple confirmed or suspected cases known to be near the parish community or personally known to parishioners, then it is advisable temporarily to suspend both Communion on the Tongue and Communion from the Chalice.
Stage 2: Once there is a large number of cases locally, at least some local schools have closed (or are operating on very high levels of absence), and there are multiple confirmed or probable cases in the parish community, then it is wise temporarily to replace the shaking of hands at the Sign of Peace with another gesture (e.g. a bow to each other).
ALL the indications given should be answerable in the affirmative before a decision is made to suspend or change practice.
